COURSE DESIGNER: Jack Nicklaus
JNSE DESIGNER: Brian Silvernail
COURSE TYPE: Reproduction of existing course
LOCATION: Kensington, Australia
DATE: August 19, 1993
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Here's a list of the people that I would like to thank for
helping me to create this course:
* To my wonderful girlfriend Leslie, without who's help
this project would not have been possible.
* To Dan Hecht, Rich Libero and the PNGT staff for
their trust and assistance.
* To Scott Chesney for his help in suggesting source
material for the course.
* To John Kunyak for his great JNSE Designer's Toolkit
utility.
* To Daniel Jeung for his help in trying to locate
source material for Australian GC.
* To those who contributed the few rocks, flowers and
other objects I borrowed and altered.

ABOUT THE COURSE
The Australian Golf Club, one of the country's most prestigious clubs, was
founded in 1882. The course is located on a 175-acre site in Kensington,
which is just due south of Sydney. Jack Nicklaus came into the picture in
1976, when he was asked to submit ideas for a redesign of the venerable
course. Actual construction began in 1977, with Jack himself supervising.
He introduced a number of water carries and planted many trees to transform
Australian from a virtually barren linksland course to one like the lush
tree-lined designs found in the United States. In 1987, Australian was
named to Golf magazines `100 Greatest Courses in the World'.
In creating my version of Australian, I could only find a very limited
number of resources. The main one was the book entitled `The Golf Courses
of Jack Nicklaus', which is unfortunately out of print and very hard to
locate. It provided me with an overhead view of the layout, a few
photographs of certain holes, and a hole-by-hole written description of the
entire course. I relied on the book mainly during my design. I also
referred to Accolade's version of Australian GC that was part of its
`International Course Disk' for JNUG. It was basically used to get a
general idea of where hills and trees were placed. Between these two
sources, I've tried to give the sense of what it is like to play in the land
down under.
Most of the objects, except a few rocks and flowers, are original and were
created for this course. All of the trees were scanned from photographs and
then color adjusted. They were also reduced and used to help create the
background, so the look of the foliage should be close to the actual course.
Sydney can be seen in the distance on a few holes during your round. The
book mentioned that "this beautiful course is adorned with flowers at
aesthetically advantageous points." Unfortunately, I didn't have any
information where these points might be, so what you see is my own idea of
course beautification.
Length is one of the main features of the course. At just under 7100 yards
from the championship tees, the course was definately designed with big
hitters in mind (and they probably will have an advantage). I designed the
greens with tiers and subtle contours (following the basic layout of
Accolade's version), so if you are near the cup, you should have a
relatively straight putt. In play testing, and watching the computer
players, I found that the course is rather tame when the wind is low. But,
if the wind is blowing, Australian will probably bear its teeth. Good luck
and have fun.

I'D LIKE TO HEAR WHAT YOU THINK
I'd love to hear what you thought of the course, good or bad. Please feel
free to give me any advise, since it will only help me improve on future
designs. I can be reached through Prodigy and my ID is JKKW23B. My home
address is:

I hope you enjoy playing The Australian Golf Club as much as I have enjoyed
creating it.
